What Easter Means to Me

Updated: Apr 6, 2021

Easter Sunday was a big affair growing up. Church ladies decked out in their lilac matching dresses with hats the size of 32" TV's, little boys and girls polished up in their expensive Easter suits and frilly dresses. This day similar only to Mother's Day had the entire vestibule packed "standing room only". Even the preacher's robe was different. All white, with swirly details and gold trim accompanied by his all white pristine gloves. The styrofoam communion cups were even replaced with sterling silver goblets... It certainly gave the illusion that THIS was a very special day, one that was memorialized captured by the barrage of Polaroid light bulbs constantly being flashed.

As I grew older, this day would mean something so much bigger. It was a celebration of a miraculous event, a defining moment for all of Christianity (and other religions) to recognize the blood-stains tears and brutality that Jesus bear for us, for our transgressions and so that we may have eternal life. We are forever indebted and so undeserving of his grace as he hung sacrificed out "on a hill far away" where he paid with his life; a sacrifice for his father (John 3:16). Born a pauper, son of a carpenter, birthed in a dirty manger, nails driven into his body, a crown of thorns on his forehead, beaten and bruised for our iniquities. Yet, this is a day of his resurrection and rejoicing because he lives!! Awaken from the grave on the 3rd day as the tomb was rolled back.

Your belief system and spirituality may be unlike mine e.g. Easter may simply represent springtime, Easter baskets and bunnies, colored eggs and candy. But I implore you to reflect where you are today vs. where you've been, and search a personal relationship with the Almighty, Source, Light, Yahshua or whatever your reference. But more importantly, gain an understanding in that which you believe and hold on to those values and convictions not based on tradition, but based on time and testimony. As the saying goes, if you don't stand for something...you'll fall for anything!
